Clear out zip files you have already unzipped

Omaculate offers a zip for the Trash only when its unzipped folder sits right beside it, like "fonts.zip" next to "fonts". A zip on its own is never touched.

Why it helps

Archive Utility leaves the zip behind after unpacking it, so every download you open takes up its space twice.

What it matches

  • .zip, .tar, .tar.gz and similar archives
  • Only when a folder with the same name is beside it ("src.tar.gz" + "src")

What it leaves alone

  • A zip without its unzipped folder: it may be the only copy of a delivery or a dataset
  • The unzipped folder itself
  • Trash rows always ask first, even when the recipe is set to Just handle it.
In the recipe editor

A zip in Downloads that's already unzipped goes to the Trash.

Set it up in Omaculate

  1. Open Omaculate from the menu bar and go to Recipes.
  2. Under Suggested, choose Zips already unzipped. It's ready to save, on Downloads.
  3. Look over the files it would touch, then press Save.
  4. Press Tidy now, check the list, and approve it.

Change anything by tapping its words, for example: only zips older than a week; leave out one kind of name ("isn't named *backup*").

Or by hand: have Archive Utility clean up after itself

  1. Open Archive Utility (in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications, or search for it with Spotlight).
  2. Choose Archive Utility › Settings….
  3. Set "After expanding" to "move archive to Trash".

That applies to every zip you open from then on, including ones you meant to keep.

Questions

Is it safe to delete a zip file after unzipping it?

Usually, if the unzipped folder has everything you need. The zip is a spare copy. Omaculate only offers zips whose unzipped folder is right beside them, and only moves them to the Trash.

What if I unzipped it somewhere else?

Then the zip is not matched. Omaculate only looks for the folder next to the zip.
