Chrome partial download

What is a .crdownload file on a Mac?

A .crdownload file is a download Google Chrome is still working on; when it finishes, Chrome renames it to the real file name.

Check before you trash it

Leave it alone while Chrome is still downloading. If the download has failed or been cancelled, the leftover file is safe to trash, but it can’t be opened.

What it is

Chrome writes a download into a file ending in .crdownload while it arrives, then renames it when it is complete. Chromium-based browsers such as Brave and Edge do the same. If a download is cancelled or fails, the .crdownload can be left behind.

Where it comes from

Downloads, or wherever Chrome saves files, while a download is in progress.

Check before you remove it

  1. In Chrome, open the downloads list (Command-Shift-J on a Mac, or the download icon in the toolbar).
  2. If the download is still running, let it finish. If it failed, cancel it there and Chrome removes the file.

Questions

Can I open a .crdownload file?

No. It is an unfinished file. Resume or restart the download in Chrome instead.

Does Omaculate move unfinished downloads?

No. Omaculate skips .crdownload, .download and .part files, and anything changed in the last 10 seconds, and tries again on its next run.
