For researchers and academics

For researchers: journal PDFs renamed by their title, drafts kept in order

With Grand Oma on macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence, Omaculate renames PDFs with unreadable names, like journal download codes and arXiv IDs, by what is in them. It reads the document on your Mac, and the rename can be undone from History.

Papers named by code

Journal sites and preprint servers name files by ID, so a folder of reading becomes impossible to search.

Versions everywhere

fig3_v2, fig3_v7, draft and final pile up side by side.

Data and documents mixed

Datasets, slides and papers all download to the same place.

Setting it up

  1. Start the free trial or get Grand Oma, and turn on smart naming in Settings (macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence).
  2. Add "Rename unreadable documents" from the suggestions.
  3. Review the first list: each row shows the old name and the new one.
  4. Add "Gather PDFs and documents" below it to collect the renamed papers.

Good to know

  • Use {date}-{content} if you want the download date in front.
  • The "is an older version" condition matches every version but the most recently changed one, for drafts and figures.

Questions

Is the paper sent to a server to be read?

No. Smart naming uses Apple's on-device model and reads the first 2,000 characters of the document on your Mac.

What if my Mac does not have Apple Intelligence?

Settings says smart naming is unavailable, and renames use the file's own name. Every other recipe works.
