Zip archive

Can you delete a .zip file after unzipping it on a Mac?

Usually yes: once the unzipped folder sits next to it with everything you need, the .zip is a spare copy and can go to the Trash.

Usually safe to trash

Trash a zip only when its unzipped folder is complete. Keep zips that are the only copy of a delivery, a backup or a dataset you haven’t opened yet.

What it is

A .zip file packs files and folders into one compressed file. Double-clicking it on a Mac opens Archive Utility, which unpacks it into a folder next to the zip and leaves the zip where it was.

Where it comes from

Downloads: client deliveries, font packs, exports, photo sets, code.

Have Archive Utility remove the zip after unzipping

  1. Open Archive Utility with Spotlight (Command-Space, then type "Archive Utility").
  2. Choose Archive Utility › Settings… and set "After expanding" to move the archive to the Trash.

Questions

Do I lose anything by deleting the zip?

Not if the unzipped folder has everything in it. Check it opens before you trash the zip.

Does Omaculate trash every zip?

No. Its recipe only offers a zip when its unzipped folder is right beside it. A zip on its own is never matched.
