Firefox partial download

What is a .part file on a Mac?

A .part file holds a download that Firefox or another app is still writing; it disappears when the download completes.

Check before you trash it

Leave it while the download is running. A leftover from a failed download is safe to trash.

What it is

Firefox saves the data of a download in progress to a file ending in .part next to the final file, and removes it once the download is done. Some other download tools use the same ending. A .part left behind usually means the download was interrupted.

Where it comes from

Downloads, next to the file being downloaded.

Questions

Can I rename a .part file to open it?

Usually not. The file is incomplete, so it may not open. Download it again instead.

Does Omaculate move .part files?

No. It skips them, along with .download and .crdownload files, until the download is done.
