Move screenshots off your Mac Desktop into their own folder

Omaculate moves every screenshot on your Desktop into a Screenshots folder beside it. With Grand Oma it happens as each one lands; on the free version, when you press Tidy now.

Why it helps

macOS saves every screenshot to the Desktop by default, so a week of work leaves a carpet of "Screenshot 2026-…" files over everything else you keep there.

What it matches

  • Files macOS marks as screen captures, plus names that start like a screenshot
  • On the Desktop

What it leaves alone

  • Other images and photos
  • Screenshots already inside a folder
  • File names: they stay as they are
In the recipe editor

A screenshot on the Desktop is moved to Desktop/Screenshots, as it arrives.

Set it up in Omaculate

  1. Open Omaculate from the menu bar and go to Recipes.
  2. Under Suggested, choose Screenshots. It's ready to save, on Desktop.
  3. Look over the files it would touch, then press Save.
  4. Press Tidy now, check the list, and approve it.

Change anything by tapping its words, for example: rename them by date, like 2026-10-30-screenshot; a folder per month inside Screenshots; trash screenshots older than 90 days (Trash always asks).

Or by hand: change where macOS saves screenshots

  1. Make a folder for them, for example Pictures/Screenshots.
  2. Press ⇧⌘5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
  3. Click Options, then Other Location…, and choose the folder.

From then on new screenshots go there. The ones already on your Desktop stay until you move them.

Questions

Where do screenshots go on a Mac?

To the Desktop, unless you change it. Press Shift-Command-5, click Options, and pick another folder under "Save to".

Does Omaculate rename my screenshots?

Not with this recipe. It moves them and keeps their names. You can add a rename in the recipe if you want one.

Can it do this the moment a screenshot is taken?

Yes, with Grand Oma: set the recipe to run on arrival. On the free version it runs when you press Tidy now.

Let Oma move screenshots into a folder.

Free for one folder. Everything free for 3 days, then Grand Oma is $14.99, once.
