For people who use VoiceOver

For VoiceOver users: files with names you can tell apart

With Grand Oma on macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence, Omaculate renames documents with camera, scanner or code names by what is in them, so VoiceOver reads a name that tells you what the file is. Recipes read as plain sentences, and Oma's pictures are hidden from VoiceOver.

Names that sound the same

Scanner and camera names are long strings of letters and numbers that are hard to tell apart by ear.

Too much to arrow through

A Downloads folder with hundreds of files takes a long time to read through.

Rules that are hard to read

Rule builders made of nested menus are slow to check by ear.

Setting it up

  1. Get Grand Oma or start the trial, and turn on smart naming in Settings (macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence).
  2. Add "Rename unreadable documents" from the suggestions.
  3. In Review, each row reads the old name and the new one before you approve.
  4. Add "Archive old downloads" so Downloads only holds the last month.

Good to know

  • Keyboard: ⌘↩ approves, Space opens Quick Look, ↑ and ↓ move between rows.
  • Renames can be undone from History if a name is not what you wanted.

Questions

Does it rename pictures too?

Smart naming reads documents: PDF, Word, RTF and text. Pictures keep their names unless you add a rename with the date or source.

Is anything uploaded to make the names?

No. It uses Apple's on-device model. Files and file names never leave your Mac.

Let Oma have a look at your Downloads.

Free for one folder. Everything free for 3 days, then Grand Oma is $14.99, once.
