Safari partial download

What is a .download file on a Mac?

A .download file is a download Safari hasn’t finished; it holds the partial data so the download can be resumed.

Check before you trash it

Keep it if you want to resume the download. If you don’t, trash it; you can always download the file again.

What it is

While Safari downloads a file, it keeps it in a package ending in .download. When the download completes, the real file takes its place. If a download stops, the .download stays so Safari can pick up where it left off.

Where it comes from

Downloads, or the folder chosen in Safari › Settings › General.

Resume a stopped Safari download

  1. In Safari, click the downloads button in the toolbar.
  2. Click the resume button next to the download. Or double-click the .download file in Finder.
